| A LETTER FROM THE ADMINISTRATION
Cheryl A. O'Brien Principal As parents of Edison Intermediate School students and supporters of education, we know that you will be pleased to learn that plans are underway to make significant improvements to Westfield High School. Thanks to the efforts of a Citizens Advisory Committee, a recommendation has been made to construct an addition and make a number of renovations to WHS. These improvements are needed to update outmoded facilities as well as to accommodate the 500 additional students who will be coming to Westfield High School in the next five years. The proposed addition will house thirteen new science rooms with sufficient space for the technology essential to a first class science program. Current science rooms can be renovated to provide ten additional classrooms. In addition, major improvements are proposed for the auditorium, gyms and art studios. The addition of a women's athletic facility to Kehler Stadium has also been recommended in order to accommodate the needs of our female athletes. For those with internet access who would like more information and a virtual tour of the high school, go to http://westfieldnj.com and click on "school bond information." Among the young people who will be most directly affected by these improvements are Edison's current students. If the project goes ahead as recommended, our current 8th graders will be sophomores when the project is complete and they will have the benefit of the improved facilities for three of their high school years. Edison's 6th and 7th graders will have these benefits throughout their entire high school experience. The New Jersey Department of Education has accepted our plans and will provide approximately $6.5 million in funding toward the projected $21,495,000 cost of the project. We will ask the people of Westfield to consider a bond proposal on Tuesday, December 12. The Board of Education and the State of New Jersey have approved the recommendations of the Citizens Advisory Committee. The future of our high school is now up to Westfield voters. Please take the time to vote on Tuesday, December 12. ******************************************************* PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE Greetings to all for a happy holiday season. Are you ready????????????????? December-Hard to believe-just a few short weeks until 2000 ends-remember all lasts year's New Year's hype!!!!!! That was a whole year ago!!!!! Time is just moving along! Our wish for all our students, families, administration, faculty, and staff, is for a peace filled and joy filled holiday season!!!!!!!!!! We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our honor roll recipients that received ices for regular honor roll and make your own ice cream sundaes for distinguished honor roll on Tuesday, December 5 at dismissal. . It appears to have been a success. This was to replace the bagel breakfast recognition due to numerous complaints. This new form of recognition appears to have been well received and was appreciated by the students. Turnout for all three grades parent visitation days hit an all time high. Thanks for all your support. As parents, we can understand a little bit better the rigors of the middle school day, and all that comes with it by seeing it firsthand!!!!!! If you missed it this year, don't worry, it's an annual activity. We did hear comments about the timing of the days, we will be looking more closely at next year's calendar, not to be too close to a holiday for one, and possibly visiting on a half day. Any other comments or suggestions please don't hesitate to contact us. Lastly, and most importantly, please remember to vote on December 12, 2000. 2PM-9PM for the Bond. Our middle schoolers now will be the ones to benefit from it's passing! Respectfully Submitted, Claire Hughes and Donna Perch email address: edisonpto@westfieldnj.com Please feel free to contact us with any comments, suggestions, etc. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: NEXT PTO MEETING - PASTA NIGHT WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31, 2001 @ 7PM. ******************************************************* PLASTIC GROCERY BAG RECYCLING PROGRAM AT EIS ENDING DEC. 22, RESTARTING FEBRUARY 5 We've had an overwhelming response to the grocery bag recycling program! Thank you! We are going to stop collecting bags before winter break so that we can catch up with what we already have. It takes a lot of time to process the bags and the club members have been doing an outstanding job, but we are still swamped!!! Encourage your child to join the environmental club. This bag recycling program takes a lot of people helping to make it a success. We meet Mondays after school until 4 pm in room 225. We are planning on taking some trips throughout the year and money we raise from the recycling program can be put toward any activities we want to do. Thank you for your efforts! Carrie Somers ****************************************************** SGA The Student Government Association is "snow" excited about the month of December. Our holiday dances will be held on Friday, December 15. The sixth grade dance is 4-5:30 and the seventh/eighth grade dance is 7-9. Both dances are held in the cafeteria Tickets are $3.00 in advance and $5.00 at the door. Tickets will be sold during lunch. Keep in mind that dances are for Edison students only. Also, please make arrangements for your child to be picked up promptly at the end of the dance. The SGA will also sponsor a food drive this month for those in need. Please encourage your child to bring in canned or non-perishable items to donate. As an added incentive, all items donated will be worth 2 points for your child's grade level. These points will be tallied and count for points toward our always anticipated Spirit Week in February. Don't forget our open gym nights, held the first Wednesday of each month from 6-8pm. For only $1.00 students can come shoot hoops. December 6 is our next open gym night. Eighth grade parents....it's never too soon! We will be starting to think about the eighth grade dance in January...details to come later. Also, mark your calendar. The 8th grade YMCA bash will be held at the Westfield Y on January 27, 8-11pm.
