Annual Book Sale

Gaston Award

On Sunday, March 9, 2008, the 30th Gaston Award will be presented to Jane Stepanski.  The Gaston Award is given to a person or persons whose extraordinary efforts and support has benefited the Library.  Jane has been a member of the Friends' Board since 1991.  She has served as trip chairperson, vice-president, president and liaison to the Board of Trustees for the Library renovation.  In Jane's honor, Robert W. Butts, conductor and lecturer, will perform "From Shakespeare to 'Sunset Boulevard': The Story of the Broadway Musical.  The program will begin at 2:00 p.m.  Please join us.

Scholarship

Applications for the fifth annual "Future Librarian" scholarship awarded by the Friends are available at the circulation desk on the main floor.  Those eligible are Westfield residents currently pursuing a master's degree in Library Science or college degree in Media Education.  Westfield High School 2008 graduates interested in this field, who have been employed at the public library or volunteered at the high school library, are invited to apply also.  The deadlines for submission of an application is April 15, 2008.  For further information, please contact Mary Orlando, Scholarship Chairperson at 908 233-2930.

Book Discussion

The book discussion group will meet on March 20 and review "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls.  On May 29, the group will discuss "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See.  

Trip

On Thursday, May 22, the Friends will visit Drumthwacket, Grounds for Sculpture and have lunch at Rat's.  Because we will be visiting the Governor's home, some security restrictions are necessary.  Names, addresses and phone numbers of all participants must be submitted beforehand.  Photo ID's will be checked at the door.  The price of the trip is $95.00.  The bus will leave at 9:00 a.m. from the Library.   

Museum Passes

The Friends are pleased to announce the funding of a new program to benefit the patrons of the Library.  Some of the museums included in this program are the American Museum of Natural History, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Frick Collection, and the New Jersey Children's Museum.  This program will begin in March.  Please check at the circulation desk for more information.
