Our 2020 Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to our 2020 Scholarship Winners
is a graduate of Elizabeth High School where he played in the Symphonic and Jazz ensembles. James plans to major in jazz performance in the fall. He also enjoys composing and performed two of his original jazz compositions at recent MEA Honors Recitals. He studies classical piano with Sondra Tammam and jazz piano with Oscar Perez. He has attended the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp in New Orleans and played with the Jazz House Kids Big Band Ambassadors in Montclair. In addition, he performed during the “virtual” jazz class conducted by MEA Member and jazz pianist/composer Dan Crisci at the 9th Taubman Festival in Montclair in June.
Brooke Walden has been playing flute for 10 years and piccolo for 7 years. She will be majoring in Flute Performance at the Eastman School of Music. She has been studying with Zara Lawler at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege for the past 2 years and prior to that, she studied with Clarissa Nolde. In 2019, Brooke was accepted to the NAME All Eastern Orchestra on both flute and piccolo and to the NJMEA All State Orchestra and Wind Ensemble on both flute and piccolo in 2017 and 2018.
At Westfield High School, she was coleader of the Flute Choir and was a founder/codirector of the EIS Flute Ensemble. She was Principal Flute/Piccolo for the Wind Ensemble and was a member of the 2019 Music for All National Concert Band Festival. In addition, she was a member of the New Jersey Youth Symphony for 5 years.
Florian Schantz started the trumpet at age six and plays the trumpet, cornet, Flugelhorn and piccolo trumpet, playing lead cornet in the professional Sharpshooters Band of Northern NJ. He formed the Florian Schantz Jazz Combo at 9, receiving the Louis Armstrong Award for jazz excellence at 11, and has performed across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Germany.
Florian will be studying music at Kean University.
