In light of the Supreme Court ruling a few years ago, parents and society in general are increasingly scrutinizing scout safety and oversight. We'd like to take the opportunity to share these concerns with parents and to emphasize that our troop indeed is an all-inclusive organization.
Scouting is very concerned with safety. For example, at several levels of advancement, scouts must learn and demonstrate proficiency at first aid. Many merit badges have a safety component. Scouts are not permitted to use pocket knives or axes until they pass their "Tote and Chip" certification. Scouts are restricted when swimming based on a swimming test.
Scout leaders are trained in safety matters. During summer camp this year, the adult leaders earned certification as BSA Lifeguards, in CPR, in water activity safety ("Safety Afloat") and in the Boy Scout's abuse prevention program. We show the BSA abuse prevention video annually to our troop. A major scout rule is that no scout may be alone with an adult except his own parent. This applies to all situations including skills development, merit badge and other advancement counseling, leadership meetings, outings, etc. All official scout leaders must have their references checked by the local council.
We welcome all kids to join us as scouts. (We note that Boy Scouts of America officially accept girls as scouts.) We also welcome all adults-men and women-to talk with us about helping with troop activities. Some of the best leaders in scouting are women. And some of the best leaders in scouting do not have kids in the troops they serve.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mike Wolski (789-2157; mike_wolski@multilinkbroadband.com) or the local scout council.
