Union Chinese School was formed in 1979. It started about 6 families and 10 students. It grew to about 300 families and 430 students in 1996. Many families were from Edison Township. Three new Chinese Schools were formed in Edison area in 1997, so that some of families and students were moved to Chinese Schools in Edison at that time. Now, Union Chinese School has about 100 families and 150 students.

Currently, it resides in Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate High School at 800 Rahway Ave. Westfield, NJ 07090. We have rented the location since 1988.
We offer 15 language classes and 14 culture classes on Saturday morning (see school calendar). There are 2 hours of Mandarin language class and 1 hour culture class each week from 9 am to noon. Adult culture classes are from 9am to 11am.
Language Classes are from pre-k (4 years old) to 11 grade, and 2 Chinese as Second Language (CSL) classes for none Chinese speaking families.
Students will learn Traditional Chinese characters and ZhuYin (Phonetic). When they reach fifth grade, they will also learn HanYu PinYin to prepare for the Chinese SAT II test.
Culture classes are Chinese music instrument, folk dance, knotting, kungfu, painting, calligraphy, singing, arts and crafts, drawing, basketball, etc.
Adult Culture classes are Chinese music instrument, calligraphy, and drawing etc.

Our parents organize many school activities. The biggest event is Chinese New Year program, and it's free for everyone. After the program, a self-paid dinner party will be followed with a lot of fun agenda too. There are many educational contests such as: speech, drawing, and writing contests. Furthermore, teacher's appreciation banquet and family picnic are arranged at the end of the school year.
