The Westfield Coalition for the Arts awarded grants totaling $2,194 to six Westfield teachers in 2002-2003.
At Franklin Elementary School, Elsa Hahn of the music department received a grant of $244 to recondition the bell chimes which are used extensively in the school’s music programs.
The Roosevelt Intermediate School Ceramics Club, under the direction of Robert Greenwood, received $400 toward the purchase of a professional quality pottery wheel. This popular after-school program offers students the opportunity to develop their ceramic-making skills during three ten-week sessions each year.
The Coalition awarded $400 to Lyn Aleksandrowicz and Sharon Reynolds toward the cost of attending advanced opera training at the Metropolitan Opera Guild. Ms. Aleksandrowicz and Ms. Reynolds have implemented an innovative opera program at Edison Intermediate School. The Edison School’s Operas R Us Opera Company, which presented two productions in 2003, was also awarded $350 toward the purchase of a digital camera to be used to document the development and performance of original operas by the club members.
Raymond Wojcik, of the Westfield High School music department, was awarded $400 to obtain music rights for the symphony orchestra’s performance of Aaron Copland’s “A Lincoln Portrait”, and for the purchase of music for the jazz band.
Also at Westfield High School, Joe Nierle of the drama department was awarded $400 toward framing of photographs from the high school productions and the professional installation of a permanent display in the lobby of the school auditorium.
